UN Deputy Secretary-General Belittles Security and Military Responses to Terrorism

Although Article 1 of the UN Charter specifies that the purpose of the UN is "To maintain international peace and security," the UN has now mounted a major campaign to devalue security responses to combating international terrorism. At a Security Council session on "Threats to International Peace and Security Caused by Terrorist Acts: Countering the Narratives and Ideologies of Terrorism" held on May 11, 2016, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said:

"The Secretary-General has called for a comprehensive approach to respond to the complex factors which drive people to violent extremism... When we are to address terrorist threats, security and military responses remain important – but, let's state this clearly, they are not enough. Not enough. The Secretary-General strongly focuses on a preventive approach in his Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism."
