The United Nations Economic and Social Council elected Saudi Arabia to Executive Board of the U.N. Entity for Gender Equality & Empowerment of Women, the U.N. body dedicated to the promotion of women's rights also known as U.N. Women, on April 16, 2018. Saudi Arabia was elected as part of a fixed slate submitted by the Asia-Pacific regional group, in which the number of states running was equal to the number of seats that the regional group was allotted. Saudi Arabia, where "vice and virtue" police
arrest women for wearing "indecent clothing," will begin its three year term on January 1, 2019.
