Note
On Tuesday, the UN Human Rights Council discussed the situation of human rights in Iran. Here is what passes for human rights-speak in UN circles. China criticized investigation of human rights in Iran as not being "constructive." Instead, "the Human Rights Council should uphold the principles of universality and objectivity and refuse the practice of politicization of human rights issues." Belarus said: "it considered country mandates to be politicized and selective" and the criticism of Iran to be "detrimental." Cuba said "the existence" of an investigator on human rights in Iran was "evidence of politicization and double standards." Zimbabwe said: "it did not subscribe to the imposition of country specific ...mandates because they tended to be prosecutorial, politicized and selective." Syria "condemned the singling out of specific States." Of course, none of these countries has any difficulties singling out Israel across the United Nations system. And, in case you're wondering, none of these diplomats even blushed.
