Iran executes individuals for homosexual conduct under its Sharia law. But that didn't stop it from telling a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, which is currently in a month-long session in Geneva, that sexual orientation is a "non-issue" as it relates to religious freedom. The comment was made in response to a report from a UN "special rapporteur," or expert, on freedom of religion or belief.
In the words of Tofigh Sedigh Mostahkam, the representative for Iran:
"We are also concerned that the issue of sexual orientation, in other words the LGBT issue, has been mentioned in the report of the Special Rapporteur, which is a non-issue with regard to the report."
