Many NGOs label themselves "human rights" NGOs and claim their activities are about promoting and protecting human rights. While non-governmental organizations can and should play an invaluable role in holding governments accountable for their actions and magnifying the voices of individual human rights victims, many "human rights" NGOs are themselves corrupt, fraudulent, and morally culpable. They may be bogus entities created by governments or unaccountable groups of individuals with serious anti-human rights prejudices of their own. Formal UN NGO-accreditation does not ensure human rights bona fides.
