Pregnant woman and her baby dead after Russia bombs Ukraine maternity hospital

Days after an image of a pregnant woman injured in Russia’s bombing of a Ukrainian maternity hospital garnered international attention, it’s been confirmed that she and her baby have died.
Surgeon Timur Marin said the child showed “no signs of life” after being delivered in a cesarean section. The mother hasn’t been publicly identified since the bombing Wednesday in Mariupol.
“More than 30 minutes of resuscitation of the mother didn’t produce results,” Marin said Saturday. “Both died.”
A photo of the woman holding her baby bump as she’s carried on a stretcher was one of several jarring images to emerge after Wednesday’s attack at the hospital.
The woman suffered a crushed pelvis and a detached hip, Marin said. She allegedly said “Kill me now!” as she learned she was losing her baby, according to medics.
Health officials said they were unable to get the woman’s name before her husband and father came to take her body.
A photo of another woman at the maternity hospital, Mariana Vishegirskaya, went viral, with the image showing her escaping in her pajamas. She gave birth on Thursday to daughter Veronika.
“We were laying in wards when glasses, frames, windows and walls flew apart,” Vishegirskaya recalled of the attack to the Associated Press.
“We don’t know how it happened. We were in our wards and some had time to cover themselves, some didn’t.”
Russia, which began its invasion of Ukraine last month, claimed the images that emerged from the scene of the airstrike are “fake,” contending the hospital was occupied as a base for Ukrainian extremists.
