A 22-year-old Israeli man was moderately injured Saturday after he was stabbed in an area designated for worshippers between the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba and the Tomb of the Patriarchs in what the Israeli military has called a terror attack.
A 17-year-old Palestinian suspect was arrested at the scene of the stabbing, on the outskirts of Hebron. According to the Israel Defense Forces, a civilian who was nearby when the attack took place helped soldiers at the scene to detain the suspect.
The man, who suffered an injury to his shoulder, was evacuated to Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center to receive medical care.
Earlier on Saturday Israel's Border Police arrested a Palestinian woman in her fifties near the Damascus Gate in the capital's Old City after she waved a knife at border policemen. No injuries were reported in the incident, and the woman was taken in for interrogations by the Israel Police.
The two incidents come following Friday clashes between the Israel Police and Palestinian worshippers outside the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem .The police said that its forces intervened and broke up a gathering that featured "nationalist slogans and the violation of public order" which happened in the wake of morning prayers at the site.
Stabbing incidents happen at regular intervals in Jerusalem. In October, a 16-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem was shot and moderately injured after attempting to stab a police officer.
The Israel Police stated at the time that the teen had tried to stab Border Police officers who were carrying out an operational activity in the Old City. According to police, after the teen failed to wound the policemen, he began to flee and was shot by the forces. Despite this he continued to run away and entered a house in the area of the incident. Police arrested the teen, the owner of the house he had sought shelter in and another man on suspicion that they aided him.
In August, Nassim Abu Rumi, 14, was shot and killed by Israeli police officers after he and another teenager attempted to carry out a stabbing attack.
